Ashes Ashes we all fall down...

Today is Ash Wednesday, marking the beginning of Lent.

As a good Catholic one must abstain from something for 40 days. I am not a good Catholic. Well, to be honest I am not even Catholic. However in honor of this holy tradition I will normally attempt (and fail) at giving up somthing*… What will you be giving up?

*I was going to give up alcohol, but I didn’t want to set myself up for failure… so I will need more time to think about it…

    I've never lented before. But for the sake of this post, I'll lend myself to the lentation. Here are my lentisms for 2006:

    I shall attempt to give up liver for the next 40 days.

    And anchovies.

    Oh! And celibacy. Definitely going to try to give up celibacy.

    Yes, indeed. I'm lenting like there's no tomorrow.

    Color me constrained, OCG.

    Bone- I just don’t see how you will be able to be able to abstain for liver and anchovies, but also to try and have sex… Jesus would be proud of you…

    Didn’t they make a movie in the opposite direction?


    Mr. R- I could be wrong… I just thought that’s why the Pope gave his speech this morning… so Mass and giving up something! Pronto! (And share with the rest of us!) (Glad that it wasn’t blogging… although you had me going for a bit there for a bit.)


    Sizz- I was thinking about giving up sugar… but as I just dusted peanut butter cookie off of the front of me (that I baked last night!) I think that if that is my goal I could choose it post “Lenten Prelude”, but lets face I can’t follow through on anything… why lie to myself and God at one time….

    I like Bone's idea of giving up celibacy. I'm also going to give up doing the dishes and cleaning my apartment. I feel downright holy.

    I have decided I will give up “working” during actual “work hours”. Instead I will try and fill that time with as much blogging, chatting and emailing as possible.


    Lizzie- God I couldn’t agree with you more. I see you have a fabulous list there. I may have to begin to refer to you as Saint Lizzie, and buff off that halo for you…

    Dr. Ken- I don’t know how you might possibly be able to restrain yourself for 40 days, but God understands that we all fail sometimes. Good luck to you… you may need it.

    And I admire you taking credit for your good deeds. One of my favorite lines a friend told me one time was, “Humble is for those who aren’t good enough to say they are.”

    Take your deserved credit.

    Wait, does that mean I've been lenting already for 43 years? If every day is Ash Wednesday for me, doesn't that make a veritable groundhog day of 15,695 Wednesdays?
